It was a very confusing and frightening experience. My immediate reaction was to think that it was an earthquake, but they are almost unheard of here. There was a strong feeling of vibration. It lasted about 30 seconds. A number of people appeared in the street in the immediate aftermath.

- We did not go out in panic, but some of us simply left the building (a student house) for some minutes.
- We did not see that anyone in the neighborhood woke up as well (except one person wandering around on the parking lot). Therefore, it is difficult to answer some questions (e.g., whether many or few others noticed as well).

I wasn't sure if it was the shaking or noise that woke me up. I realised straight away it was a tremor as it was low level shaking and rumbling, then it got a little stronger which was when I thought this wasn't just a tremor and I might actually be experiencing my first earthquake ever, not just in England (where the ground isn't supposed to move!) Once I knew it was an earthquake my heart started pounding and then I got scared. I didn't move or turn the light on in my room throughout the whole thing. It wasn't until a few seconds after it had stopped that I got up and went to see if my mum and sister had heard it. They were up and they had felt it. Thinking back now, I wish I had turned my light on as I knew things were shaking as I could hear it but couldn't see it. I also looked out my window after it had happened and there were lots of bedroom lights on! It seemed so surreal and I'm finding I'm having flashbacks to even comprehend that this even happened. I knew staright away it wasn't a plane going over as if we ever have low flying aircraft (which sometimes we doing living close to east Midlands Airport) it's never made the house shake.

I've been through a few earthquakes in Coventry, West Midlands, UK, the last being in 2002 that was quite strong, but quite different to this earthquake (I'm currently living in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, UK).  The 2002 quake was a very fast vibration, like a heavy train rushing past outside - and much louder too, almost like something from an action movie, with the rumbling building up from the distance and then fading away again.  The quake today (Feb 2008) was a much slower, rocking motion, side-to-side, around three or four rocks per second, as opposed to a violent vibration.  Perhaps due to this it felt stronger, I actually thought someone was physically shaking the chair I was sitting in from behind, from side to side (a roughly S -> N direction), and it went on for a while longer too, around 7 to ten seconds or so.

Possibly pointless aside: my two (manx) cats have been particularly vocal and demanding today, noticeably and annoyingly more than usual.  I put it down to the reasonably strong winds South Yorkshire has had today.  Consequently, when the earthquake began, as it was a gentle side to side motion I thought one of the cats was scratching at the back of my chair (I was sitting in an office chair).  I only realised it wasn't that when the shaking became much stronger - and noticed both cats startle and bolt beneath the sofa, which was unusual as they don't usually get on and rarely go anywhere together.  Since then, one cat has refused to emerge, and the other is constantly wedged to my side, howling.  Who'd have 'em, eh?

As stated above, things in the room shifted but fractionaly. I could definately 'feel' everything moving. It was kind of a swaying action. I could even feel the actual air in the small room I was in move, like a gentle wafting across my face. I heard noises from the building our 3 bedroom semi. The rafters and joists in the roof were disturbed, but not to the point where things were splitting and cracking or being moved from there position. It's hard to explain.
I felt the first waves as it came on, something like the doppler effect I imagine? where the frequency of the waves on the wavefront were higher and of a smaller wavelength. At that moment I shouted "Diane...Earthquake!!" to my wife who was in the bedroom next door to me. she had been in bed 15 mins and was drifting of when I called her. As the intensity quickly increased ie: approx 3 seconds I called loudly again "it's an earthquake, did you feel it?" I stood up out of my chair at that moment and kind of savoured the experience.. Makes you feel so small compared to geology under your feet. 
I would have said it lasted all of 6 or 7 seconds, it's hard to estimate. All my senses were firing as I was taking it in. For a brief moment I was frightened to be honest, I looked up at the ceiling thinking that the roof may collapse. 
I am a plant operator working on commercial construction sites driving a 25 ton excavator and have an appreciation of the forces at play on buildings and structures, but that certainly got my adrenalin pumping!

As soon as it ended my wife came in to the box room where I was standing next to the computer desk. Man, she looked pale. we looked at each other and were just like....WOW.
Her hands were shaking a little and I'd be lying if I didn't say mine had a bit of a twitch lol... the old heart was beating a bit quicker.

The crazy thing is I experienced the other quake we had here, the one who's epicentre was 11 kms underneath dudley, west midlands approx 5-6 years ago. I cant remeber the magnitude of that one but this was definately stronger. and the dudley quake preceded this one by about 5 mins. It was around 1 o'clock in the morning then. Amazing...

This quake aroused the birds also, as I looked out of the window straight after the fact. Some people in our street had noticed it as I could here a few doors and windows opening and closing as people must have been looking out themselves although I did not physicaly see them.

First indication  to me was a low rumble then a strong jolt which shifted the bungalow and its concrete slab base (thankfully it sort of floated, lessening the damage), followed by 8-10 seconds sustained light shudder & rumbling (sounded like half a dozen lorries going by). Felt like I was winded for a second with the jolt - I could swear air pressure changed for an instant at that time. Other homes around me are of similar construction - no obvious damage to be seen.

The noise was more like when a very strong wind gets under the rafters and and the house shakes only the prssure of such was not there. At first i thought a part of the rogue satellite had landed near.

This was my 2nd experience of an earthquake but this was far stronger than the last a few years ago. My whole house physically shook and there was a deep rumbling. My furniture etc rattled loudly and my bed also shook rapidly. It probably did not last long but seemed like a couple of minutes. I was physically shaking and frightened and immediately got out of bed to check my children. It had not disturbed them or my dog.

Although the Epicentre was near Lincoln, and Lincoln is somewhat further away from Derby than Birmingham, this one felt considerably stronger here than the Birmingham one of 2002, even though the two were of similar listed magniture, and even though I was in the same location.  Interestingly the main event was proceeded by at least five seconds of a stable/unbroken fairly pure sub-sonic "hum" (couldn't hear, but could feel it - like a very low base note.)  Ground floor flat with a -solid- floor.

It swayed the house like I would expect to see the little needle on the seismometer would draw as waves of the vibrations would come and go. It even rocked the chair I was sitting on. Birds were cheeping away all around the place and alarms were going off. I would have liked to have seen it from outside or from a helicopters perspective.

I am a geology student and clearly noted the arrival of faint P-waves and then approx 30 seconds later strong S-waves accompanied by a low frequency booming noise that was of moderate volume. The S- waves induced resonance in my wooden joisted ceiling and I would estimate it underwent displacement of approx 5 centimeters - the ceiling size is approx 4.5m by 2.5m

I'm not sure it's relavent, but me and my partner both woke up about 2 mins or less before it happened, we were confused as to why we were awake, then we both felt it happen. The shocks lasted about 5 seconds, the motions were a regular pattern, kinda circular from what I recall, No car alarms or anything went off in the area, no other signs that anything had happened. Confirmation came from a freind who lives the opposite side of Leeds, West Yorkshire who experienced pictures fall off her walls.

It originated in the east and was audible moving to the west for in excess of 30 seconds. This was my first experience of an earthquake and it frightened me. The noise from my wardrobe rattling and the doors and windows resonating alarmed and frightened me. I actually thought that I was having some sort of 'episode' as sitting upright in bed i felt that i was bobbing gently like ripples on a the water - very strange!!! No car or house alarms were set off in the neighbourhood and no one else was present outside. I was glad when i finally found info online about the earthquake; it settled me - a little!

This was longer in duration than previous earth tremors felt by me. Previous ones were quick but more powerful and felt like a wave passing over the land. This quake was longer by 3 seconds and the tremors were closer together. There was no sense of direction of the tremors, previous ones I have experienced have felt like a wave but I had a clear sense of what direction it came from. My partner decribed it as a swirling feeling. I Have too agree, the doors rattled loudly and the floor plus the chair I was sat in moved but not in any particular direction. From this I would imagine that the tremors came up from below and not across. There was no warning i.e rumbling before shock or sound. Hope this helps.

I was at work on the first floor of a warehouse (at a height of 5-10 metres) when the earthquake occurred. My 2 colleagues and I were immediately alarmed by the very obvious shuddering of the building, and heading towards our office door to 'evacuate' when the motion subsided. One of my colleagues has experienced far more powerful events of this kind in India, and instantly stood up and exclaimed, "earthquake!" when the walls and floor began to shake. I have experienced earthquakes of similar magnitude, but this is the first time I have been alarmed by the experience.
